From November 8, 2024 to January 18, 2025, the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca presents the exhibition Michael Sweerts. Realities and mysteries in 17th century Rome, curated by Andrea G. De Marchi and Claudio Seccaroni, dedicated to one of the most enigmatic, complex, and internationally intimate Flemish painters.Still little known to the general public, he was ignored by historians of his time. Michael Sweerts (Brussels ca. 1624 - Goa (?) ca. 1664) was rediscovered by Northern European critics around 1900 and, in the mid-century, by Italians of the caliber of Giuliano Briganti and Roberto Longhi. The research for this exhibition sheds new light on his biographical, social, and artistic story, with important archival and restoration discoveries that have allowed connections between works and documentary traces, as well as technical reassessments. The exhibition is an extraordinary opportunity to discover and deepen his absolute singularity and to clarify some of the mysteries surrounding him.It will also be possible to reevaluate an aspect of his work that is mostly ignored, such as his vocation for teaching and professional development of young artists, which he understood as a true school of training, in which he does not seem to have imposed his own language. Also, the weight of his Roman stay, which critical reading has predominantly mortified, making him a Nordic hero.Eighteen works will be on display: thirteen paintings by Sweerts, four of which are owned by the Academy, restored for the occasion, and, in addition, paintings by close collaborators and ancient plaster casts will also be exhibited to testify to the artist's interest in sculpture. In addition to the Academy's works, those on loan from public and private collections will be visible, including the Académie de France Villa Medici, the Galleria Spada, the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica, the Musei Capitolini, the Pinacoteca Capitolina (Rome); the Uffizi Galleries and the Museum of Casa Martelli (Florence); the National Museum of Medieval Art (Arezzo); the Worcester Art Museum, Worcester (MA).
