Yellow lemon, deep blue, bright red, and brilliant orange: colors as therapy. Here is the vitamin program of the new exhibition at the French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici, CHROMOTHERAPY. Color photography that makes you happy. On stage from February 28 to June 9, 2025, the exhibition curated by Maurizio Cattelan and Sam Stourdzé, traces the history of color photography throughout the 20th century through the sharp gaze of 19 artists. The exhibition itinerary, divided into 7 sections, transports us into vibrant and saturated worlds where color strikes the retina and engages the intellect. Often denigrated and rarely taken seriously, color photography has actually allowed photographers to unleash their creativity, to use their palette to repaint the world. Many have freed themselves from the documentary constraints of the photographic medium to explore the common roots of image and imagination, flirting with pop, surrealism, bling, kitsch, and baroque. The conquest of color in photography closely follows the invention of the medium with the first experiments for scientific purposes in the mid-19th century. In 1907, the first industrial color photographic process was developed thanks to autochrome, created by the Lumière brothers. It is the beginning of a century of chromatic experimentation: from ordinary scenes to philosophical and political reflections, color transcends the simple tool to become an essential narrative element.
