Torre del Borgo

The Torre del Borgo

The Torre del Borgo was probably built in 1160 as a symbol of the merger of the three castles that dominated the Recanatese hill and underwent a restoration intervention in the upper part in 1322, following the fire that had also damaged the adjoining Palazzo dei Priori. With the retraction of the facade of the new priory building, rebuilt in 1467 on the axis of its eastern side, the tower acquires an autonomous architectural value, even more so at the end of the 19th century, with its complete isolation following the refurbishment works of the Piazza Giacomo Leopardi and construction of the new Town Hall. It is a square-plan building with a height of 36 in which the MUREC (Museum of Recanati) of its history from its origins to the 1900s and its most illustrious characters has been set up since 2016. Moving on transparent routes you can consult digitized sources within touch screens, photos and news about the city. The internal volume is divided vertically into seven levels and the rooms are connected to each other by a steep flight of stairs that gets light from the windows-slits. The second level hosts a space with site-specific contemporary art installations called LIVEllo2, curated by Nikla Cingolani.
