Located at Rua de Nossa Senhora de Fátima 291-299, the Casa-Museu Marta Ortigão Sampaio is housed in a splendid modernist building from 1958, designed by the architect José Carlos Loureiro and opened to the public in 1996 after being donated to the city of Porto by Marta Ortigão Sampaio.
The museum evokes the sophisticated environment of the Porto bourgeoisie of the early 20th century, with rooms furnished according to French, English, and Indo-Portuguese taste. The rooms house a rich collection of naturalistic works by Portuguese artists Silva Porto, Carlos Reis, José Malhoa, Alfredo Roque Gameiro, and especially a wide selection of paintings, drawings, and photographs by the painters Aurélia de Sousa and Sofia Martins de Sousa.
The jewelry collection, one of the most significant personal collections in Portugal, includes almost 300 pieces from the 17th to the 20th century, made with remarkable techniques and materials. Completing the heritage are furniture, ceramics, porcelain, glassware, accessories such as fans and vintage hats, as well as historical weapons related to the family.
