The Museum Cappella Sansevero is pleased to announce the opening to the public of the exhibition Rags by the British artist Darren Almond, produced in collaboration with Galleria Alfonso Artiaco. The exhibition set up inside the Cappella Sansevero will be open to visitors from Wednesday, January 22nd to Monday, March 17th, by purchasing the museum entrance ticket. Access is allowed by mandatory reservation. Simultaneously, Almond will also be the protagonist of "Songbirds and Willows" set up at Galleria Alfonso Artiaco, just a few steps from Cappella Sansevero, in Piazzetta Nilo. A double exhibition that traces a path in the heart of the ancient center of Naples to discover the latest works created by Darren Almond, through various artistic languages. The English artist returns to Naples and for the first time exhibits six large-scale works in the baroque jewel that houses the Veiled Christ. The works on display in the nave of Cappella Sansevero stem from the photographs that the artist was able to take in a unique and secret place: the London studio of the painter Lucian Freud, who passed away in 2011. This is how Darren Almond describes the creative process that led to "Rags". The artist draws inspiration from the dirty colored cloths, a constant material presence in the daily activity of a painter and at the same time a trace of his creative gesture, on which the attempts and residues of what will come to life on the painted canvas are imprinted. The "rags" - in English "rags", from which the name of the Neapolitan exhibition derives - bear streaks, color residues, sometimes bright, sometimes subdued by the mixture of various shades and repeated use. The now dry paint gives the fabric a rigidity and a plastic dimension. Almond photographs them up close, tries to capture their almost sculptural appearance, and returns them as large-scale works, transforming them into a material landscape in which the observer can immerse themselves. The subsequent painting interventions allow him to insert himself into that creative process that remained suspended and blocked in its inception. The result immediately brings to mind the folds and creases of the draperies of the Cappella Sansevero: the rich and colorful ones that animate the lively perspective vault, and the marble ones that seem to emerge from the frame of the "Deposition" on the main altar. And again, the delicate and very thin veils that, with an almost imperceptible lightness and an almost wet effect, envelop the bodies of the "Veiled Christ" and the "Modesty". The conceptual space that the artist creates inside the nave envelops the visitor, forcing them to walk in the material and then to direct their gaze to the sculptures, in a game of reciprocal references that emphasizes the forms and harmonies.
