The Morra Greco Foundation is pleased to present Imitación Controlada, the first exhibition in Italy by the artist Fidel García (Cuba, 1981), realized within the framework of the first call for contemporary art by the Municipality of Naples. The project is promoted and funded by the Municipality of Naples as part of the contemporary art programming for 2024. The exhibition will take place from October 10 to 24, 2024, in the evocative setting of the Church of San Severo al Pendino.
The exhibitionImitación Controlada is the presentation of the homonymous sound installation designed by Fidel García for the Church of Pendino. Conceived by the artist during a residency in Naples in 2023 and created from reflections on the concepts of freedom and control, the work explores the thin line between masses and collectivity, institutions and power, connecting the city of Naples to Havana.Imitación Controlada is indeed a "simulator of collective behavior" confined within a physical and sonic space composed of field recordings collected by García from the streets of Naples during the football victory celebrations of 2023 - during his residency at the Morra Greco Foundation - and the streets of Havana during the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. These sound repertoires have merged into a continuously updated database titled "Mass Hysteria," formalized for the first time on this occasion. The installation, symbolically confined to a sculptural space, is therefore a traversable topography generated by the uncontrollable hysteria of celebrating or rioting masses. The sound carpet obtained from these recordings is reshaped to create a hybrid "controlled" by the manipulative action of the artist, thus highlighting the perversion of the concept of mass through the symbolic confusion of sounds, where the boundaries of individuality dissolve into their sum.The operation of the work - generated by the impulse of the indistinct swarming of the masses in moments of collective aggregation and the suppression of singularity, disciplined by the intervention of a sound technician within a reproducible element - reiterates and reflects the paradoxical and subtle functioning of control regimes, evoking questions about the role and concept of the individual in these contexts, recalling García's background, along with an "in vitro" reproduction, through artistic languages, of a control system.Placing the work in the central nave of the church amplifies the sound impact of the installation, reaffirming, in the architectural redundancy of the hosting place, the institutionalized structure of such power and control dynamics.By intertwining the Church of Pendino, its now desacralized status, and the architectural aspect of the work, Imitación Controlada reflects on the biopolitical structures that categorize and discipline our condition of existence.
The exhibition project was conceived by Fidel García during the residency period he spent in Naples at the Foundation in 2023. This residency is part of an exchange program promoted by the Morra Greco Foundation and funded through the resources of the Global Forum project - Contemporary Art Exhibitions EDI 2021, under an agreement signed in Havana between the Foundation itself, CNAP Consejo Nacional Artes Plásticas, Taller Chullima workshop, and the Institute of Cooperation and Development Italy Cuba, with the moral sponsorship of the Cuban Embassy in Italy.
