In the last two years, the collections of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples have been enriched with new works, both through purchases and donations. These include watercolors, gouaches, engravings, vintage photographs (featuring views of the Museum's rooms and Pompeii), nineteenth-century copies of the most famous ancient bronzes. The exhibition From Pietro Fabris to Vincenzo Gemito. New acquisitions of the MANN presents to the public a selection of 100 of these pieces. Among the acquisitions, the standout pieces are the large late eighteenth-century watercolor by the Roman artist Filippo Maria Giuntotardi (1768–1831) - featuring one of the oldest views of Pompeii (Porta Ercolano) - and the replica of the Pompeian bronze statuette of Narcissus, created by the Neapolitan sculptor Vincenzo Gemito (1852–1929). Among the donations, the twenty-three preparatory drawings offered by the scholar and collector Carlo Knight (of which 8 are on display) allow for a more accurate reconstruction of the history of The Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed. The donation from Ernesto Bowinkel enriches the Museum's photographic collections with several thousand positives and around two hundred glass plate negatives, all related to the history of travel in Italy, of which Naples and its antiquities were a fundamental stop. All these works document, among other things, the immense fortune that the National Museum has had over time. The Museum of Naples is a very special one - which will celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2027 - for not only being the guardian of a very rich heritage, but also a witness, like few others, of the deep connection that the modern world has always had with classical antiquity at least from the 1500s until today.
