The collective exhibition UMWELT curated by Marco Mancuso will open on September 13, 2024, at FMAV Palazzo Santa Margherita, in collaboration with the festivalfilosofia 2024 on the theme of Psyche and with Smart Life Festival. The exhibition project highlights how art and artifacts of technoscience bring us closer to a deeper understanding of non-human expressions of intelligence, to engage with them, integrate them into a new collective environment, and spread a renewed ecological ethic. In other words, in the anti-disciplinary relationship with the fields of design and philosophy, they trigger new modes of dialogue and relationship between human beings and the context, natural and artificial. The artists who have worked in synergy with the curator to inhabit the exhibition spaces of Palazzo Santa Margherita with their works are: Forensic Architecture (The Nebelivka Hypothesis), Semiconductor (Through the AEgIS), James Bridle (Solar Panels (Radiolaria Series)), CROSSLUCID (The Way of Flowers), Anna Ridler (The Synthetic Iris Dataset), Entangled Others (Decohering Delineation), Robertina Šebjanič/ Sofia Crespo/ Feileacan McCormick (AquA(l)formings-Interweaving the Subaqueous), and Eryk Salvaggio (The Salt and the Women). A catalog with texts by Marco Mancuso, Daphne Dragona, K Allado-McDowell, and Laura Tripaldi enriches and completes the exhibition. Umwelt means "environment" or "world around us." It was introduced by the biologist and philosopher Jakob von Uexküll in his seminal essay "A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans" (1933) to describe the unique perspective that each organism has of the world around it. It is the set of perceptions, experiences, and interactions of a subject with its environment. Its ability to integrate into the context around it, based on its own needs and the collective needs of an "entangled" ecosystem that humans are learning to understand not as an immobile and passive entity in the background, but rather as dynamic, vital, and endowed with literally unthinkable forms of intelligence. Through an exhibition path articulated in a series of works ranging from scientific investigations to speculative works, from data analysis systems to predictive organisms, from models integrating biological and artificial elements to possible wordling architectures, the UMWELT exhibition aims to open a debate on the critical, aesthetic, and narrative potentials offered by the study of unexplored forms of shared agency between human beings, computational machines, and natural systems.
