Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco

Pinacoteca of the Castello Sforzesco

The Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco in Milan offers an exhibition itinerary that focuses on the salient themes of Lombard painting from the mid-fifteenth century to the threshold of Neoclassicism. In addition, there are two significant pictorial groups from the Veneto area and a small but selected series of Flemish-Dutch paintings from the seventeenth century.

In the path of the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco, carved wooden reliefs, marble statues, terracotta busts and a series of medals (Civic Numismatic Cabinet and Medal collection) combine to suggest the poetics of art through the various types and different material supports.

The layout of the Pinacoteca makes use of large altarpieces, devotional paintings, polyptychs and miniatures made by Lombard masters who are often innovators in the pictorial technique and in the personal interpretation of religious and secular themes.

Some supranational personalities qualify the path with paintings of absolute importance for the history of art: the Madonna enthroned with saints signed by Andrea Mantegna in 1497, the Portrait of Lorenzo Lenzi portrayed by Bronzino around 1525 and, again, works by Correggio, Titian and Tintoretto who pass on the faces of famous people.

In the patrimony of the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco, entire cycles of mural paintings or frescoes saved from religious buildings and private palaces, destroyed by war or demolished, are preserved.
