Spazio Leonardo - the multifunctional space open to the city of Leonardo Assicurazioni hosted in The Corner building, the heart of Porta Nuova in Milan - is pleased to present Subtractive Scores, a solo exhibition by Michele Lombardelli, an eclectic artist from Cremona who moves between visual art, installation, and musical experimentation.Three color fields - purple, orange, and green - make up the large wall painting that welcomes visitors at the entrance of the Space. These shades are born from the overlap of primary colors according to subtractive logic: yellow and red for orange, red and blue for purple, blue and yellow for green. These colors are not chosen for decoration, but to activate an emotional and inner resonance, as Kandinsky suggested: each color touches the soul like a piano key.
The exhibition relates Michele Lombardelli's painting production to the early theories of color and visual perceptions, developed from the historical avant-gardes of the early 1900s such as Staatliches Bauhaus and De Stijl. Research aimed at creating an artistic language free from the constraints of form and content, capable of exerting a positive influence on social life, generating well-being and balance. In Subtractive Scores, Lombardelli creates a dense dialogue between sound and painting, two areas that had so far followed parallel paths in his research. The alternation of lines, vertical and diagonal color fields, precisely traced on neutral backgrounds, build an essential but non-static visual rhythm, where geometry opens up to an almost musical dimension. The three abstract paintings in the center of the wall behave like geometric scores, silent sequences that interact with the chromatic background and with the sound diffused in the environment: four tuning forks with different frequencies generate a subtle and vibrant acoustic field, transforming the space into a listening place.
The exhibition also includes a series of works on paper, evidence of the experimentation phase that led to this synthesis: studies, variations, and structures that show drawing as a laboratory of form and intuition. The exhibition is also inspired by the poetics of Piet Mondrian, who believed that basic lines and shapes, constructed consciously, could become strong and true works of art. The strength of Lombardelli's work lies precisely in this essentiality: a space of attention and listening, inviting to a more subtle and profound perception of the soul.
