The exhibition Miró and the Canticle of Brother Sun organized by the Capuchin Museum of Milan (via Kramer 5) will open on Saturday, October 25th, with the curatorship of Rosa Giorgi, Director of the Museum. The exhibition is the winter event of the Capuchin Museum of Milan, which, after the opening on October 25th, will be open from October 26th, 2025, until January 24th, 2026. On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the composition of the Canticle of Brother Sun, also known as the Canticle of the Creatures, composed in 1225 by St. Francis of Assisi, the Capuchin Museum of Milan, which has been engaged for some years in celebrating other important Franciscan anniversaries (the eight hundred years since the approval of the Rule of St. Francis and the Nativity at Greccio in 2023, and the impression of the stigmata in 2024), welcomes this opportunity by dedicating an exhibition to the composition. The exhibition, which is part of the celebrations for the Franciscan centenary, focuses on the Canticle of Brother Sun, one of the first poetic texts in the vernacular language, a cornerstone of Italian literature, addressing a modern work, Joan Miró's Càntic del Sol, where the illustration of the Catalan artist meets the text of St. Francis. The exhibition aims to celebrate eight hundred years since the composition of the Canticle of Brother Sun, along with fifty years of the illustration within the artist's book created by Joan Miró and published in 1975, in addition to one hundred years since the first systematic illustrations in the text, and twenty years since the death of Gianluigi Uboldi, an engraver and printer who dedicated much of his art to Franciscan poetry. The exhibition will highlight one of the lesser-known aspects of the intense activity of the great Catalan artist, who defined himself first and foremost as a painter but who often put his art at the service of words, dedicating himself to illustrating books as an engraver and lithographer. The project for St. Francis's Canticle of Brother Sun, which was published in 1975, had originated some time before, involving several authors, protagonists of what can be called a true publishing venture. As early as 1962, at Miró's initiative, the poet Marià Manent involved another important poet from his land, Josep Carner, who was entrusted with the translation into Catalan of St. Francis's text. Carner promptly completed the work, but the publication was delayed for more than ten years due to Miró's continuous revisions to his sketches, resulting in the Càntic del Sol having engravings that are authentic evocations of the poetic texts they accompany.
