From September 20, 2025 to January 11, 2026, the rooms of Palazzo Reale in Milan will host an extraordinary retrospective dedicated to Leonora Carrington, one of the most fascinating and visionary figures of the 20th century. Over 60 works – including paintings, drawings, photographs, and archival materials – narrate the artistic and human journey of this great artist who, starting from England with her Celtic roots, traveled across Europe and the United States, until finding a home in Mexico, where she was celebrated alongside Frida Kahlo and Remedios Varo as one of the most important artists of the country.

This exhibition is the first solo show dedicated to the work of Leonora Carrington in Italy and aims to present the artist as a radically multifaceted figure, crossing the multiple languages she experimented with: painting, writing, theater, and critical thinking.

Through a selection of visionary works and archival materials, the exhibition explores her imaginative and intellectual universe, blending art, mythology, ecology, feminism, and spirituality. The exhibition highlights the deep connection Carrington had with Italy, starting from the discovery of Renaissance art in Florence during her formative years, to revealing the complexity of her cultural, Celtic, and post-Victorian roots and her participation in the surrealist movement.

The exhibition path reflects the unique trajectory of a woman artist, migrant, and exile, who made imagination a tool of resistance and knowledge. Carrington emerges as a pioneer of ecofeminism and tireless explorer of consciousness, capable of bringing to life a fantastic and subversive world where the everyday intertwines with alchemy, fairy tales, and the unconscious.

The exhibition includes paintings, photographs, books from her personal library, writings, and unpublished documents, offering an extraordinary opportunity to discover one of the most influential and visionary figures of the 20th century.
