From 23 September to 11 January 2026
Milan finally pays tribute to Andrea Appiani (Milan, 1754 – 1817), a central figure of Italian Neoclassicism and an absolute protagonist of painting bridging the Enlightenment and the Empire, with the exhibition Appiani. Neoclassicism in Milan, scheduled at the Royal Palace from September 23, 2025, to January 11, 2026. A project that marks the great return of an artist highly celebrated by his contemporaries, now to be rediscovered.
The exhibition offers a complete and in-depth look at the artistic production and intellectual identity of the 'first painter' of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, awarded with honorary medals such as the Légion d'honneur, defined as the "painter of Graces," a key figure of Milanese and national Neoclassicism. His refined, harmonious art has been at the center of religious, aristocratic, and political commissions. Especially famous during the Napoleonic period, his production ranges from monumental frescoes to portraits, medals, with a unique style recognized for its balance, grace, and formal rigor.
The curators, together with the scientific committee, have selected a corpus of over 100 works, brought together thanks to prestigious loans from some of the largest international collections - including the Louvre, the Musée Carnavalet and the Châteaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau in Paris, the Musée National des Châteaux de Versailles - and from numerous Italian collections. In particular, paintings and drawings of the highest quality, from the heritage of the collections of Milanese museums including the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco, the Pinacoteca and the Accademia di Brera, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, and works from the Civic Museums of Brescia, Villa Carlotta, and private collections.
