The Cantini Museum is a modern art museum in Marseille. Inaugurated in 1936, the Cantini Museum preserves an important collection of modern art, which covers a period of time ranging from the 1900s to 1980. There are works of numerous artistic currents: pointillism, the Fauves, cubism, and more. art of the period between the two wars, surrealism, and more strictly contemporary art, from the postwar period to the 1980s. It is possible to admire works by popular artists such as Derain, Léger, Picasso, Matisse, Le Courbousier, Ernst, Mirò, Jean Arp, Balthus, Giacometti, Dubuffet, Tàpies, Bacon and several others. The Cantini Museum is housed in a Hotel Particulier (old private residence) from the late 17th century which, after several passages to various families, including Jules Cantini, was finally donated to the city of Marseille to make it a museum of decorative art. The museum is very active in organizing important exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.
