The Stadtmuseum Jena, also often called Göhre, is a museum dedicated to the history of the city and the area. It is located in a late Gothic building in Jena, where the exhibition space of the Kunsthalle Jena is also housed. Inaugurated in 1901, the museum itinerary develops along 4 levels and deals with the history of the city from prehistoric times to around 1850, with a strong focus on the history of the University of Jena, founded in 1558, rendered by philosophers such as Reinhold, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel a "School of Athens" between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. The museum also focuses on the moment of maximum splendor of Jena, when the city was an important center of the Habsburg Empire. There are documents, objects and artifacts that testify to the development of the city, as well as artistic works showing views and landscapes of Jena and scale models. There are also finds from the battle of 1806, where the Prussian army fought against Napoleon.
The museum organizes numerous temporary exhibitions that delve into the history of the city and its popular traditions.
