The Kunstverein Hamburg is a Hamburg institution and exhibition space dedicated to contemporary art. The institution was founded in 1817, thus becoming the second oldest art association in Germany (the first being the Nuremberg Kunstverein, founded in 1792). Since 1817, this non-profit association has set itself the goal of registering and promoting Hamburg's contemporary art and culture through the organization of temporary exhibitions and events. A further important objective of the association is to promote and launch local emerging artistic generations. The current Kunstverein building is a former covered market, specially redesigned into a modern exhibition space.
