The Civic Museum of Carrara Marble is located in the heart of the city. The Museum was founded in 1982 on the initiative of the Municipality and contains the historical memory of the city whose symbol is marble. The purpose of the Museum is to preserve and enhance the most used material in the history of art. The rich collection consists of tools for the extraction and processing of marble from Roman times to today and the archaeological finds found in the quarry. The Museum is divided into different sections that develop through the historical periods and the themes. Respectively we have: the first section is dedicated to Roman archeology; the second and richer at the "Marmoteca" with three hundred and ten samples of marble; industrial archeology with machinery for the extraction and processing of marble; the "Technical applications" with examples of art design; the section dedicated to plaster casts and reproductions for replacement restoration; finally, the multimedia space. The Museum offers the visitor the opportunity to immerse themselves in the exhibition thanks to the new interactive multimedia section. The Museum hosts many events and temporary exhibitions that have a relationship with marble and its ancient history. Of great interest are the workshops held in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara for the study of marble. Every year events such as Sculpture Symposiums, Craft Workshops and Sculpture Biennials are hosted.
