The Cemmo Massi National Archaeological Park

The Cemmo Massi National Archaeological Park is an archaeological site located in Valle Camonica, in the province of Brescia. In 1979 it was the first Italian site to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It was inaugurated in October 2005 with the expansion of a small state-owned area called "dei Massi di Cemmo", existing since 1964. The name "Massi di Cemmo" refers to two large boulders that fell from the rock face caused by a landslide. The boulders were engraved by the ancient inhabitants of Valle Camonica dating back to the Copper Age. The engravings discovered, following numerous studies and insights, refer to divine or heroic entities. The archaeological site consists of two imposing sandstone boulders distant from each other. In the space that separates them, large stones have been found, which can be traced back to a real megalithic sanctuary. Through the study of the engravings it was possible to recognize two chronological phases of the engravings during the Copper Age. The contemporary relationship between street art and petroglyphs is very interesting, thanks to the numerous projects carried out in collaboration with the Archaeological Site.
