The Municipal Art Gallery of Cagliari is located in the historic center of the city near the public gardens. The Gallery was inaugurated in 1933 and is the main museum of the Civic Museums of Cagliari. The gallery is located in the powder magazine of the Savoy arsenal dating back to the end of the eighteenth century. The CARTEC - Cave for Contemporary Art is annexed to the Gallery, today an exhibition space for temporary exhibitions. The surrounding gardens, dating back to the first half of the nineteenth century, are a natural extension of the museum space. The gardens host nineteenth-century sculptures, the statue of Ceres from the imperial Roman era and important works by contemporary artists such as: Mauro Staccioli and Mimmo Paladino. The Municipal Gallery houses several collections: the Sardinian civic collection, the contemporary art collection and the Ingrao collection. Of great interest is the Sardinian civic collection which includes works by local artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Among the most important artists stands Francesco Ciusa to whom an entire museum room is dedicated. The Contemporary Art Collection, inaugurated in 1975, was collected by the Director Ugo Ugo. The exhibited works represent contemporary research between the 1960s and 1970s. Finally, the Ingrao collection is dedicated to Francesco Paolo Ingrao who donated his collection in 1999 to the municipality of Cagliari.
