The CARTEC - Cava Arte Contemporanea is a space dedicated to contemporary art located in the artificial caves of the medieval era that are located in the basement of the Municipal Art Gallery of Cagliari. CARTEC through its activity has reopened to the public an identity place for the Sardinian community. The caves, in fact, were used as an air-raid shelter and shelter for the works of the Civic Collection of Art during the Second World War. Today the space, thanks to a program of exhibitions, allows artists and visual operators to create works linked to the specificity of the place. The Center is a dynamic place, a workshop, a construction site dedicated to the contemporary that promotes significant mending of the urban fabric with unexpected openings to similar national and international contexts and scenarios. Creative space and laboratory of ideas, CARTEC is a place to experience an integration of intense emotional impact, between the centuries-old environments excavated by man and contemporary art. CARTEC hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary art based on research and site-specific interventions, public art projects and artists who work in relation with the "subsoil".
