From 14 September to 28 January 2024
From 14 September 2023 to 28 January 2024 the Municipality of Brescia and the Brescia Musei Foundation present LORENZO MATTOTTI. STORIES, RHYTHMS, MOVEMENTS , a major exhibition curated by Melania Gazzotti dedicated to the illustrator, cartoonist, artist and director born in Brescia in 1954. For the first time the exhibition focuses on the three worlds that most influenced Mattotti's work – music , cinema and dance – to explore and deepen his production from new perspectives , highlighting his unmistakable style and his ability to break the boundaries between genres and languages, between techniques and styles.
The exhibition begins by analyzing Mattotti 's intense and vital relationship with music , witnessed by two important groups of works: the illustrations collected in Lou Reed's book The Raven (2011) and the large ink drawings drawn for the staging of the ' Hänsel und Gretel (2009) by Engelbert Humperdinck at the Paris Opera.
The section dedicated to cinema , together with a series of works related to the interludes for the three episodes of the film Eros by Michelangelo Antonioni, Steven Soderbergh and Wong Kar-wai , includes some extracts from his many animations with the related preparatory drawings. A particular space is dedicated to his highly acclaimed feature film The Famous Bears' Invasion of Sicily (2019), based on the novel of the same name by Dino Buzzati.
Finally, to tell Mattotti's relationship with the world of dance , some of the drawings collected in the book Carneval (2005), the result of the artist's immersive experience at the Rio de Janeiro carnival , and three large unpublished canvases , painted for the Brescia exhibition, and belonging to a cycle of works on collective dances.
The exhibition dedicated to the work of the contemporary artist Lorenzo Mattotti enriches with a further piece the rich exhibition program that Fondazione Brescia Musei has put in place for 2023, the year of Brescia Bergamo Italian Capital of Culture , and is part of the process of valorising the heritage cultural culture of Brescia through contemporary art that the Foundation has undertaken with the Archaeological Stages project, which has seen artists such as Francesco Vezzoli, Emilio Isgrò and Fabrizio Plessi as protagonists in recent years.
