Gerhard Marks-Haus

The Gerhard Marcks-Haus is a Bremen museum dedicated to the work of the German sculptor and graphic artist Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981) . About 430 of his sculptures, 13,000 hand drawings and over 1200 sheets of graphic prints make up the core of the collection. Opened in 1971, the museum is housed in a 19th century building built in a neoclassical style. Gerhard Marcks, the author of the statue of the "Musicanti di Brera" on the Markt, was one of the greatest German sculptors of the modern era. Born in Berlin, he was one of the artists branded by Nazism as "degenerate": he was forbidden to exhibit, but after the war he returned to produce and exhibit his art. In 1966 he donated most of his works to a foundation in Bremen, which made it a museum. Over the years, the foundation's scope has expanded to include the presentation of both 20th-century and current sculpture: along with sculptor works, works by other modern and contemporary artists have been added. The museum also organizes numerous temporary exhibitions, as well as other interesting activities, such as courses in the museum's atelier, where those interested can try their hand at sculpture, painting, drawing, engraving and woodcut under the guidance of artists.
