Overseas Museum

The Übersee-Museum (Overseas Museum) is a natural history and ethnographic museum in Bremen. Founded in 1896, the museum is located in the heart of the city, near the main station. The building in which it is based is a historic building classified as such in 1993. The collection of the Übersee-Museum preserves artifacts from overseas civilizations such as Asia, Oceania, America, Africa, showing aspects such as their nature, culture and trade: artifacts, objects, plants, clothes, fossils, furnishings from every corner of the world and of every era. Numerous representations of stuffed animals are also preserved, with the complete reproduction of their habitat. The museum itinerary is divided into five floors. The world tour begins in Oceania, where visitors can immerse themselves in an underwater world. It is possible to see exotic fish, colorful coral reefs and legendary aquatic creatures. From the Pacific, the next stop is Asia. The continent of contradictions is presented as such: pulsating megacities such as Shanghai are represented alongside the more traditional aspects and spiritual tranquility of the continent. The excursion continues to Africa, where the vibrant metropolis of Nairobi, the fascinating animal world and African natural resources are presented. The exhibit features the continent's changing history and includes displays of modern African art. Finally, you can explore the diversity found on the continents of America, with the reconstruction of a large pre-Columbian gold treasure, a lavishly laid out Thanksgiving Day table and a life-sized bison. In the short films, people from North and South America tell their life stories, which are often intertwined with the themes of immigration, religion, politics, culture and commerce.
