From 10 February to 31 May 2024
Thursday 8 February 2024, at 11.00 am , at the Metropolitan Art Gallery “C. Giaquinto” in Bari, the press conference will be held to present the exhibition “ Natura Scultura”, a retrospective dedicated to the artist Enzo Guaricci curated by Christine Farese Sperken and Roberto Lacarbonara, promoted by the Metropolitan City of Bari.
Speakers: Antonio Decaro , Metropolitan Mayor; Francesca Pietroforte , Metropolitan Councilor delegated for Cultural Heritage; Micaela Paparella , City Councilor of Bari delegated to policies for the valorization of the historical, artistic and architectural heritage; Francesco Lombardo , Director of the Cultural Heritage and ICO Service; Emma Lobalsamo , coordination manager of the “Corrado Giaquinto” art gallery; Roberta Giuliani , head of coordination of the Archaeological Museum of Santa Scolastica; Christine Farese Sperken and Roberto Lacarbonara , curators of the exhibition.
One year after the death of the artist Enzo Guaricci (Acquaviva delle Fonti, 1945–2023), this first important retrospective, hosted in the two museums of the metropolitan city of Bari – the “Corrado Giaquinto” art gallery and the Santa Scolastica archaeological museum – reconstructs, with around fifty works, over half a century of artistic activity lived between Puglia and the cities of Florence and Rome. Here, in the second half of the Sixties, Guaricci began his training as a set designer and his pictorial production in the wake of the New Roman Figuration, taking part in some exhibitions in the capital, also thanks to the appreciation and closeness of the master Renzo Vespignani. In these years the artist reflects on social and environmental issues, aspects that will return to the center of his interest also in his subsequent sculptural production.
Starting from 1990 - following the abrupt interruption of the pictorial production in 1977 and the involvement in professional activities divided between teaching in the art institutes of Bari and Monopoli, scenography and interior architecture - the resumption of activity involves the artist in the production of bronze works, characterized by incandescent flows and attempts at formal organization that favor the geometry of the square. Subsequently, Guaricci elaborates a singular technical procedure, creating sculptures in marble powder, resin and oxides capable of giving the material a fossil and petrified appearance. A turning point that will lead the artist to produce numerous absolutely plausible "archaeological finds", eroded by time, allegories of an already archived present and iconic traces of "how we were tomorrow".
