Pisanello, a well-known painter and medalist, carried out his activity at the service of the main Italian states. Highly requested by the courts and notables for his skill, he composed complex representations or allegories and translated the portraits into medals. His executions stand out for their original realistic connotation and for the high quality of the castings. The medal features on the obverse the profile portrait of Filippo Maria Visconti, third Duke of Milan, with a tall cap and cloak with floral ornaments, indicated in the epigraphic inscription also as count of Pavia and Angera and lord of Genoa. On the reverse, signed by the artist, OPUS PISANI PICTORIS, the duke is depicted on horseback, with armor and with his head covered by a crest decorated with the Visconti viper. Around the duke, in a tournament scene, are other knights.
