Signed and dated 1523 on the wooden footrest, it is one of the most famous works of Lotto's Bergamo living room, admirable for the restless sweetness of the central group and the precious enamelled colors. The canvas was commissioned by the Bergamo merchant Niccolò Bonghi, depicted behind the Madonna. The neutral gray surface replaces the original landscape background, perhaps cut by a French soldier between 1527 and 1528.
