The exhibition Tina Modotti, Woman, Photographer, Militant. A life between two worlds is a project of the Aps History and Memory Association created in close collaboration with the Secretariat of Culture of the Government of Mexico and one of the most important photographic archives of Tina Modotti, in the period in which the Italian photographer lived in Mexico (1923-1930).

The exhibition, curated by Ada Scalchi, RA Rodríguez Villalba and JM Pouget, is organized and promoted by the management of Palazzo Chigi with the patronage of the Municipality of Ariccia.

An unmissable exhibition for those who love photography and history, which tells the life and human story of Tina Modotti (Udine 1896 – Mexico City 1942), an exceptional woman who was able to combine her passion for photography with her commitment political and social.

Tina Modotti was a pioneer of modern photography, a witness to the revolutionary movements of the 20th century, a companion of artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, a militant and a free and courageous woman. The works show his artistic evolution and his sensitive and critical look at reality.

The exhibition takes place in the evocative Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, from 8 March to 7 April 2024, and offers the public the opportunity to get to know and appreciate one of the most fascinating and significant figures of twentieth-century photography.

The images on display come from the Collection of the Photo Library of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) of the City of Pachuca Hidalgo, the largest Ibero-American photo library.

INAH, owner of the photographic collection, deals with the training, dissemination and protection of Humanistic Culture at a national and international level and is the result of the work of the association and coordination Tina Modotti. The coordination was established with the aim of bringing the iconographic richness of Mexico's cultural heritage back to Italy.

The collection of the National Photo Library of the INAH of Pachuca (the most important collection of the INAH System) has a total of 94 images (84 negatives and 10 slides) taken between 1923 and 1930. The material has been part of the National Photo Library since 28 August 1979.

The photos were donated by Carlos Vidali, representing his father Vittorio Vidali, member of the PCI from Trieste and Senator of the Republic in the 1960s, last companion of Tina Modotti.

The 60 images that will be exhibited, kindly provided by the archive of the INAH National Photo Library, illustrate the path of Tina Modotti as a photographer of the Mexican social reality, her integration, her sentimental and artistic bond with the cultural environments of the time and the his political and social commitment, until the last photos taken during his exile in Berlin, in 1930.

Together with the photos, letters, texts, documents, articles and other materials will also be on display which will contribute to understanding the personality of Tina Modotti in the last phase, of the woman who was no longer a photographer but a militant, as well as Director of the International Red Rescue Brigades, up until his death, which occurred in Mexico City in 1942.
