Gastone Novelli (Vienna, 1925 - Milan, 1968) was one of the leading figures in Italian painting in the post-war period. The exhibition dedicated to him stems from the significant entry into the civic collections of some donated works from the Gastone Novelli Archive. The exhibition aims to pay tribute to the artist on the hundredth anniversary of his birth with a complete overview of his research path through the collection of the most significant works present in Italian public and private collections. The exhibition is also an opportunity to reap the fruits of the most recent and important studies dedicated to the artist, foremost among them the General Catalog of paintings and sculptures published in 2011 by the Novelli Archive in collaboration with the Mart - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, which in 1999 had presented the last major retrospective dedicated to him by a public institution, after the one realized in 1988 by the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. The path of this retrospective at Ca' Pesaro includes all the different phases of Novelli's research: from the concretist beginnings of his Brazilian years to the gestural and sign suggestions of the Modern Experience period, a magazine founded together with Achille Perilli that brought together some of the greatest Italian and foreign artists active at that time in the late fifties; from the maturation at the beginning of the sixties of his very personal poetics, in which images and words reveal the ambiguous nature of language, to the end of the decade, when words and actions return to be invested with a more explicit ethical and political meaning. Alongside the most extraordinary masterpieces, the exhibition presents numerous works previously considered lost and that have been rediscovered after the publication of the General Catalog, many of which have never been exhibited to the public.
