From 6 August to 24 October 2021
Exceptional guest of the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti at the Ca 'd'Oro will be, until 24 October, the dazzling view by Canaletto (1697 - 1768) depicting the Molo towards the west with the Mint and the column of San Teodoro of the Civic Art Gallery of the Castello Sforzesco di Milan. The loan is the result of a temporary exchange between the two museum institutions generated on the occasion of the contemporary Milanese exhibition dedicated to Italian Renaissance sculpture (The Body and the Soul from Donatello to Michelangelo. Italian Renaissance Sculpture, Milan, Castello Sforzesco, 21 July - October 24).
Part of a pair of matching paintings from the collections of Thomas Osborne, fourth Duke of Leeds, the work of Canaletto passed, after several passages, in the collection of the Milanese senator Luigi Albertini, to be then purchased, in 1995, for the civic collections.
The exhibition of the canvas next to the painting of the same subject by Francesco Guardi (1712 - 1793) from the Franchetti collection offers the possibility of juxtaposing two extraordinary Venetian views, among the most appreciated by the aristocratic tourists of the Grand image "(and two different pictorial conceptions of the urban portrait) of absolute protagonists of the lagoon landscape painting of the eighteenth century: the luminous version by Canaletto, with a wide scenographic scope and impeccable perspective coherence, referable to the painter's maturity and datable within 1742, and the vibrant lyrical interpretation offered by Francesco Guardi in an advanced phase of his work, now far away, in its fantastic indeterminacy, from the clear rigor that had sealed, in a sunny image, "as engraved in crystal" (A. Mariuz), Canaletto's Venice in the perception of travelers and collectors of the time.
In the façade immortalized by the two artists, buildings are condensed that embody the history of Venice itself and accompany us in the discovery of its changes and its urban persistence, on a journey through time that this year celebrates the 1600th anniversary of the legendary foundation of the city. This initiative is also linked to the official events planned to celebrate the anniversary.
