The show

Among the artists who have provided one of the most successful and original interpretations of how to cross the boundary between figuration and abstraction, Antoni Clavé (Barcelona, Spain, 1913 - Saint-Tropez, France, 2005) returns to Venice , a city that has reaffirmed and consecrated the success the artist was already enjoying at an international level with the assignment of the entire Spanish pavilion to his incessant research in 1984. Again on the occasion of the Art Biennale, the artist is now the protagonist of a major exhibition organized by ACP - Art Capital Partners in its prestigious exhibition venue: Palazzo Franchetti , together with the Antoni Clavé Archives .

The exhibition - curated by Aude Hendgen , art historian and head of the Antoni Clavé Archives and Sitor Senghor , independent curator - consists of about fifty works including paintings and sculptures, including large ones, selected to explore one of the most cherished themes to the artist: that of the warriors . Recognizing an influence of the iconographic imagery of statuary and African masks, the exhibition will then be hosted from 23 March to 27 May 2023 at the Donwahi Foundation in Abidjan to close the circle of references that characterize the exhibition.

After Jean Dubuffet and Massimo Campigli, ACP - Palazzo Franchetti confirms its interest in 20th century artists who have a particular bond with the city of the Doges and presents Antoni Clavé for the 59th edition of the Venice Biennale. Through the filter of the warrior theme, the exhibition offers the opportunity to investigate the research of the great Spanish master through the evolution of his style. It is in fact a recurring theme in his research and appears as early as 1958 first of all in his paintings and then acquires substance and volume and thus also popularizes the world of sculptures. This is followed by the successful series of Kings that dominated the artist's artistic imagination in the 1950s and thus continues the choice of ancient figures, the last heirs of a vanished civilization who are transformed into powerful archetypes of the Spanish heritage. The paintings range from 1958 to the 1990s and will include some essential works already exhibited in the 1984 Venice Biennale. The sculptures, which also include the famous "cabinets", reveal Clavé's love for the most heterogeneous materials - including wood, metal, cardboard - and scrap.
