From 22 February to 4 May 2025
From February 22 to May 4, 2025, at the Museum of Oriental Art in Venice, a 14th-century parchment from the State Archives of Venice will be exhibited. With a comprehensive scientific and educational apparatus, it will allow visitors to travel through time and space, particularly towards India and the wonders of Asia. The project, sponsored by the Consulate General of India in Milan, is promoted by the Regional Directorate of National Museums Veneto-Oriental Art Museum, the State Archives of Venice, and the University of Warwick.
The document has recently been restored thanks to the contribution of the University of Warwick.
The intervention has allowed historians Luca Molà and Marcello Bolognari to reconsider aspects and issues related to the document: the verdict of a trial involving a group of Venetian nobles who set out in 1338 on a commercial journey to Delhi in India. The project offers the opportunity to delve into the developments of trade between Venice and Asia a few years after the death of Marco Polo. Thus, a varied and composite fresco is outlined, "a Middle Ages with open horizons."
