The Real Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos, founded in 1768 by Charles III, is a historical institution in the heart of Valencia, dedicated to the promotion of the fine arts: painting, sculpture, architecture, and engraving. Located in the elegant San Pío V Palace, its headquarters also houses the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts.
The Academy has contributed to the training of legendary artists such as José Benlliure, Ignacio Pinazo, and Cecilio Plá, and preserves a heritage of over 15,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, medals, archaeological finds, and historical architectures. Its collections support artistic research and museum exhibitions in venues such as the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, the IVAM, and the Faculty of Fine Arts of San Carlos.
The institution plays a significant public role in cultural heritage, providing advisory assistance to local authorities and publishing the scientific journal Archivo de Arte Valenciano since 1915. Its activities include lectures, concerts, presentations, and training sessions recognized at an academic and institutional level.
In addition to the historical archive and the specialized library with thousands of volumes from the 16th to the 20th century, the Hemeroteca preserves valuable art magazines, while the Archive documents academic events through manuscripts, minutes, and official acts.
The Academy also hosts painting and musical composition awards. Its initiatives are an integral part of Valencia's cultural life, offering a bridge between artistic past and contemporary research in one of the city's symbolic places.
