From April 12 to June 29, 2025, the Camuc and the Stazione dell'Arte in Ulassai will host the exhibition Mirò meets Maria Lai. The charm of surprise.
A unique opportunity to explore the unprecedented dialogue between the works of Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma de Mallorca, 1983), an internationally renowned master of Surrealism, and those of Maria Lai (Ulassai, 1919 - Cardedu, 2013), an artist who intertwined art, memory, and identity in a profoundly original visual language.

The exhibition curated by Lola Durán Úcar and Marco Peri focuses on the poetic and imaginative dimensions of both artists' work. Miró constructs universes of signs and colors, transforming reality into symbolic constellations, while Maria Lai weaves stories and relationships through threads of memory and matter.

Both artists have roots in a Mediterranean island: Miró has always had a special connection with Mallorca, while Maria Lai with Sardinia. These places have shaped their imaginary, pushing them to seek new horizons. Miró lived in the heart of the 20th-century avant-gardes in Paris, while Maria Lai spent significant periods in Rome and Venice. However, both chose to spend the most mature part of their expressive journey in the territories of their native islands, finding in them an endless source of inspiration.

Through a selection of over 70 works - including prints, paintings, books, tapestries, and unique pieces from the Fundació de Arte Serra in Palma de Mallorca - Miró's imaginative universe dialogues with the textile works, artist's books, and drawings that Maria Lai donated to her community at the Stazione dell'Arte in Ulassai. The exhibition path reveals surprising expressive affinities and shared interests between two seemingly distant artists, but united by imaginative connections and conceptual resonances.
