«In my paintings there is always something that captivates. A cap that closes." With this epigraphic sentence, Italo Cremona responded in April 1973 to the questions of an interviewer who was wondering about the frontality of his shots. What he defined as a cap was actually a flat pictorial surface which, despite having a claustrophobic character, opened outwards with mirrors, windows and gashes. The fullness of an artist's studio or a domestic interior was thus permeated with the images that came from outside, in the same way that the facade of a building or the view of a square hinted at what was happening beyond them. rough walls.

It is starting from this simple consideration that works belonging to the GAM collections have been selected that are capable of making the moment of encounter between what is outside and what is inside resonate. The gaze, trapped in the specularity of the exhibition and in a game of visual correspondences, moves between dimly lit rooms and unadorned walls, windows that open onto boundless horizons and desolate visions of urban suburbs, tidy artists' studios and sunny walls of red bricks, environments in which the human presence is only supposed, never explicitly declared.
