From 19 October to 23 March 2025
On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the diplomatic agreement between Korea and Italy, the MAO Museum of Oriental Art in Turin, in partnership with the Nam June Paik Art Center (Korea) and with the support of the Korea Foundation, presents the exhibition project Rabbit Inhabits the Moon, curated by Davide Quadrio, director of the Museum, and Joanne Kim, Korean critic and curator, with Anna Musini and Francesca Filisetti. The exhibition also benefits from the curatorial and scientific consultancy of Manuela Moscatiello (Chargée d'étude, Maison de Victor Hugo in Paris), Kyoo Lee (professor of philosophy, gender studies and justice studies at the City University of New York) and Patrizio Peterlini (Director of the Bonotto Foundation).
Rabbit Inhabits the Moon aims to activate a dynamic dialogue that reflects the evolution of the cultural and artistic landscape of the two countries, in particular by reinterpreting the legacy of Nam June Paik and his influence on contemporary generations.
Video works, installations, and new productions by Korean artists from the collection of the Nam June Paik Art Center will be juxtaposed with some of Paik's main works, many of which are on loan from the Bonotto Foundation (Colceresa, VI), and precious traditional artifacts from important national and international museums.
The exhibition project presents 17 works by Nam June Paik, including the installation Rabbit Inhabits the Moon, which gives the title to the exhibition, Plexiglass Cello TV, Fluxus Island in Décollage Ocean Human, Ecce Homo, and Zen for Head, as well as 5 installations by six contemporary Korean artists - Sunmin Park, Ahn Kyuchul, Unmake Lab, eobchae × Ryu Sungsil, Shiu Jin, and Jesse Chun, and a new production by Park Jiha.
The path is then punctuated by precious artifacts related to the philosophical and ritual aspects of Korean cultural and artistic tradition, including an eight-lobed bronze mirror from the Goryeo period, a pear-shaped stoneware bottle from the 15th century, and Kwon Dae-sup's Moon-jar from 1952, on loan from prestigious museums of Asian art in Italy and Europe, including the Musée national des Arts asiatiques Guimet in Paris, the E. Chiossone Museum in Genoa, and the Museum of Civilizations in Rome.
A special section of the path curated by Kyoo Lee will be dedicated to the exploration of Korean shamanic culture in relation to the figure of Nam June Paik, while a consultation room will be dedicated to the in-depth study of contemporary artists as part of the project by the Korean architect Kun-Min Kim.
