The exhibition Giro di posta. Primo Levi, the Germanies, Europe opens on Friday, January 24th in Turin, at the Medieval Court of Palazzo Madama, promoted by the Centro Internazionale di Studi Primo Levi and curated by Domenico Scarpa. Created with mostly unpublished documents, Giro di posta offers a vast network of private correspondences that only now become public, telling the story of a divided Europe and Germany. The threads of the story are woven by Levi's German and German-speaking interlocutors, but not only them. The exhibited correspondences - scribbled messages in pencil on scraps of paper or impeccable typewritten letters on letterhead paper - span almost half a century of European history. Auschwitz, an experience Levi never stopped investigating the secrets and meanings of, is the geometric center of the story. If This is a Man sounded like a question addressed to the reader from the title, but the events of the book had taken place in German and by the hands of Germans, so that question had to reach them. In 1959, the translation of the book into German was finally initiated, and it was published in 1961, the same year the Berlin Wall was built. From that moment on, an intricate epistolary network put Primo Levi in contact with a large number of remarkable interlocutors: common readers, readers who were also writers, former Lager companions, and even someone who was "on the other side" in Auschwitz. Knowing Levi, it is not surprising that among his correspondents he was particularly attracted to those who were the farthest in mentality or geography.
