In the year internationally dedicated to Impressionism, from October 16, 2024, to March 9, 2025, the GAM - Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Turin presents the exhibition "Berthe Morisot. Impressionist painter," celebrating the history and artistic journey of the only woman among the founders of the Impressionist movement.
The exhibition is organized and promoted by Fondazione Torino Musei, GAM Torino, and 24 ORE Cultura - Gruppo 24 ORE, curated by Maria Teresa Benedetti and Giulia Perin, in collaboration with the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, an institution that boasts the largest collection of Berthe Morisot's works, from which important paintings originate.
The exhibition illustrates Morisot's connection to the poetics of the movement and highlights her very personal touch in capturing the fleeting nature of the moment, symbolizing the fragility of existence, gracefully representing elements of nature and reality.
The exhibition setup also includes a display created by Stefano Arienti, a well-known Italian artist, as part of a project conceived by Chiara Bertola, Director of the GAM - Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, titled the Intruder. In dialogue with Morisot's works, Arienti's contribution unfolds throughout the exhibition, using a variety of elements to imagine a unique context and setting for the artist's works that enriches the visitors' experience.
A major interpreter of Nouvelle Peinture, Berthe Morisot played an important role in the history of the movement by participating in seven of the eight Impressionist exhibitions held from 1874 to 1886 (her only absence in 1879 due to the birth of her daughter Julie).
