Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum, located about 10 minutes from the center of Trondheim, is one of the largest open-air historical museums in Norway with over 80 original buildings preserved on approximately 70 hectares of land, around the ruins of the medieval castle of King Sverre (built in 1182–83).
The museum is divided into three main areas: the urban city section, with buildings from the 18th-19th centuries such as workshops, photo studios, clinics, banks, and shops recreated in period settings. The rural section, composed of characteristic farms, warehouses, village cottages, and the precious Haltdalen Stave Church (an exceptional 12th-century stave church) as a collection jewel. The ruins of Sverre's Castle, with a panoramic view of Trondheim and the fjord, offer a suggestive and immersive historical experience.
With over 100,000 artifacts, including objects, photographs, tools, and collections of traditional items from the region, the museum tells over 1,000 years of history and culture of Trøndelag. Many scenic houses are visitable through permanent exhibitions accompanied by narration and authentic settings.
