The show

The great retrospective on “ Canova, Gloria Trevigiana ” introduces the section of the new Museo Bailo entirely reserved to the nineteenth century . And it is a physiological passage that leads to the discovery of art in Treviso and Veneto starting from the years characterized by the extraordinary light of the sculptor to unravel along the century. With well-known artists and works alongside others "revealed" by this new exhibition, until now relegated to the deposits by the narrowness of the exhibition spaces of the "old" Bailo. Civic Art Gallery: she is Margherita Prati Grimaldi, in the bright painting by Andrea Appiani. He is Sante Giacomelli, in the portrait of Natale Schiavoni.

The noblewoman linked to the Municipality of Treviso in 1851 a nucleus of paintings destined to constitute the first nucleus of the Civic Art Gallery (among these Lorenzo Lotto and Giovanni Bellini today in the Santa Caterina Museum), while the second in 1874 linked to the newly established Art Gallery well 54 works mainly 'contemporary' at the time, which constitute the main nucleus of the 19th century Gallery. From the Giacomelli Collection come, among other paintings by Francesco Podesti (The first day of the Decameron) and Ludovico Lipparini (Lord Byron swearing on the tomb of Marco Botzaris), by Eugenio Moretti Larese (Dante's death) and Odorico Politi (Elena kidnapped from Teseo and Piritoo, and played with dice), Michelangelo Grigoletti (Susanna and the elders) or Natale Schiavoni (two episodes of an oriental environment); but there are also “revolutionary” artists such as Ippolito Caffi (The blessing of Pius IX from the Quirinale at night) and Luigi Querena (View of Venice at sunset). Also on display is Francesco Hayez 's “Family Group”, in which the painter portrays himself at the age of 16: the artist's first known work. Spectacular paintings and sculptures, but not only.

The curators have in fact chosen to widen their gaze also to ceramics, in homage to the great Treviso manufactories of that production that today we would define as design. All this to offer the visitor a glimpse of what the Civic Museums preserve of the neoclassical and romantic moments of our art history. To further enrich the proposal of the new Canova del Bailo Gallery, two important pluses. First of all, almost an 'exhibition within an exhibition', a selection of 30 extraordinary Canova artistic shots by the photographer Fabio Zonta: 30 large-format photographs, to give shape to a monographic. in the engravings, and that of the photographer called to confront himself with the grace and elegance of Canova's sculptures. The interpretative 'lens' of the photographer highlights the three-dimensionality of the works, accentuating details, subjects, expressiveness.
