In the year dedicated to glaciers, from an idea of the Trento Film Festival, the Mart and the MUSE, together with the Festival itself, join forces and bring to Trentino the new exhibition project by Sebastião Salgado. Curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado, the exhibition is produced in collaboration with Contrasto and Studio Salgado, with the coordination of Gabriele Lorenzoni (Mart) and Luca Scoz (MUSE). Among the world's most renowned artists, photographer, activist, and humanist, throughout his long career Sebastião Salgado has documented profound social, environmental, and economic changes, giving voice to the planet's most vulnerable. In recent years, he has dedicated hundreds of shots to one of the most evocative natural environments and at the same time one of the most endangered ecosystems: that of perennial snows. The exhibition is indeed part of a broader context: the United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted the proposal to declare 2025 the International Year for the Conservation of Glaciers. Since the first scientific monitoring in the 1960s, it has become clear that decade after decade there has been a constant, dramatic reduction in the volume and surface area of glaciers worldwide, some of which are already effectively extinct. The disappearance of glaciers entails, first and foremost, the cultural loss of invaluable, dazzling landscapes, capable of captivating generations of travelers, artists, and poets. On the other hand, glaciers are fundamental elements in regulating the hydrological cycle and local and global climate, they are alive and life-supporting, on them depend the water supply of two billion people and two-thirds of global irrigated agriculture.
