Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum of Syracuse

The Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum

The “Paolo Orsi” archaeological museum, inaugurated in 1988, is located inside the Villa Landolina Park where it was moved from its historic location in Piazza Duomo. Designed by architects Vincenzo Cabianca and Franco Minissi, it offers the visitor the result of the intense archaeological excavations conducted by Paolo Orsi, Luigi Bernabò Brea, Paola Pelagatti, Giuseppe Voza in central-eastern Sicily.

Among the largest European museums for the extension of the exhibition spaces, it is divided into three polygonal bodies that run around a single central room. On the semi-basement floor there is a splendid numismatic collection in which the masterpieces of the most important master engravers of the Greek age are exhibited. On the first floor, Sector A is dedicated to the prehistory and protohistory of Eastern Sicily; Sector B to the Greek colonies of eastern Sicily with particular attention to Megara Hyblaea and Syracuse. In Sector C, the finds from Camarina and other sub-colonies of Syracuse, Gela and Agrigento are exhibited. Going up to the first floor, Sector D takes the visitor to Syracuse in the Hellenistic and Roman periods; Sector F recounts the Christian and late ancient phase of Syracuse and the territory of eastern and central Sicily.

The museum houses a hall for conferences and cultural events.
