Villa del Tellaro

Roman Villa of Tellaro

The large villa from the late imperial Roman period, on the bank of the Tellaro river in the municipality of Noto, discovered in the early 1970s following clandestine excavations, extended beneath an eighteenth-nineteenth century farm. The central body is organized around a peristyle, surrounded by living rooms, of which only those on the north and south sides are preserved. All the rooms were decorated with floor mosaics, among which the representation of the scene of the redemption of Hector's body and the hunting scenes stand out for their compositional complexity and pictorial values, perhaps the personification of 'Africa. The mosaics, dated to around the middle of the 4th century. AD, find the most immediate comparisons in those of Piazza Armerina and some centers of Proconsular Africa and are probably the work of workers of African artistic taste, with Roman figurative components.
