Another major exhibition, dedicated to one of the most important artists of Italian neorealism of the 20th century, arrives at the exhibition spaces of the Fortezza Firmafede in Sarzana from December 19, 2025, to June 2, 2026. Renato Guttuso - The Color of Reality is the title of the exhibition, curated by Lorenzo Canova, which offers an important insight into one of the most intense and consistent protagonists of Italian painting of the 20th century, continuing an artistic journey already developed in recent years at Fortezza Firmafede with masters such as Gian Carozzi and the major exhibition dedicated to Giorgio de Chirico in 2025. The exhibition, designed by Archivi Guttuso and MetaMorfosi, is organized at Fortezza Firmafede, site of the MIC - Liguria Regional Museums Directorate, by Confcommercio La Spezia, in the current semester representing Rete Imprese La Spezia on behalf of local trade associations - Confcommercio, Confesercenti, CNA, Confartigianato - with the support and patronage of the Municipality of Sarzana, Confindustria, ANCE, and in collaboration with Casa d’Arte San Lorenzo. Framed by the Renaissance beauty of the Fortezza, visitors will be able to admire an exhibition that traces the evolution of the artistic language of the Sicilian painter, covering fundamental themes such as civil commitment, work, landscape, eros, still life, and portraiture. An artist deeply rooted in the reality of his time, Guttuso conceived art as a tool for knowledge and action, combining personal experience with the collective dimension. His painting, never descriptive or celebratory, interprets and transforms reality with expressive force, color, and emotional tension. Through paintings, drawings, and graphic works, the exhibition tells forty years of political, civil, cultural commitment, and constant investigation, in what Guttuso himself, already in 1934, called the heart of painting. The exhibition highlights his constant vocation for responsibility: for Guttuso, painting was a way to take a stand. His dialogue with history and politics was never an abstract adherence, but a concrete and painful participation that made art and life a single and indissoluble gesture. This union emerges strongly in the juxtaposition between the large compositions on civil themes and his most intimate and lyrical works.
