Women photographers, authors of images through which they express their vision of the world, interpreting society, customs and cultures through the lenses of femininity.
Women photographed, immortalized by shots that portray both their intimate existence and public commitment, and whose body, with its presence and postures, becomes central in the story of the journey towards emancipation.
One like the other, women protagonists of the process of evolution and redemption of their role over the last seventy years, told with intensity by the exhibition “Photography is woman. The female universe in 120 shots from the Magnum Photos agency, from the post-war period to today", open to visitors from 13 October 2023 to 25 February 2024, in the rooms of the ancient castle, now a museum, of La Castiglia di Saluzzo in the province of Cuneo.
“Fotografia è donna”, curated by Walter Guadagnini and Monica Poggi, is a project organized by the Municipality of Saluzzo and the Artea Foundation, in collaboration with CAMERA - Italian Center for Photography, Magnum Photos and the Amleto Bertoni Foundation.
The exhibition develops along a path made up of six thematic nuclei, which are entrusted with the task of describing the lives of women, exploring it from as many observation points and proposing a choral narrative that leads to the essence of the female condition, immortalized in most disparate places in the world and in different eras.
Space and time thus intertwine in an investigation into the great social changes that characterized the second half of the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st, a continuous oscillation between individual events and current events that develops by addressing the family context, growth , identity, the myths of beauty and fame, political battles and war.
Six topics that find their overall representation thanks to the combination of twenty-two photographic projects: some of the most iconic series created by twelve Magnum Photos authors, to which are added the works of six authors of the agency capable of becoming passionate interpreters of the topics covered.
