The Salisbury Museum is a museum in the city of Salisbury. Being the city close to the Neolithic site of Stonehenge, this museum houses one of the best collections related to it and to local archeology. The museum is located in the King's House, a historic building where King James I of England was housed in 1610 and 1613. The main temporary exhibition gallery is inside the original three-story building. Above is the ceramic gallery. The temporary exhibitions organized at the Salisbury Museum generally exhibit artists with a close connection to the locality such as: Augustus John, Henry Lamb, Ben Nicholson, John Craxton, Lucian Freud, Stanley Spencer, Elisabeth Frink, William Nicholson and many others. Among the objects on display in the collection is the Lake House meteorite, a meteorite weighing 90 kilograms, the largest ever fallen on the British Isles and landed on earth about 30,000 years ago. Prehistoric treasures are also preserved: over 100 objects in copper alloy, from the late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age, in particular: ax heads, chisels, scythes and gouges, spearheads, daggers, knives, swords and accessories for sheaths. The museum's collections also include some of the most important archaeological finds in Britain, including artifacts from the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge, the Pitt Rivers Wessex Collection and the Amesbury Archer. The Salisbury Museum also has an art collection of over 4,000 paintings, prints and drawings depicting local characters and scenes of daily life. An interesting collection of costumes includes traditional clothing from Salisbury and its surroundings over the past 250 years. The museum also displays Verwood and Wiltshire Brown pottery.
