The Fondation Maeght is a museum of modern and contemporary art in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a town not far from Nice. Preserves one of the largest collections of 20th century paintings, sculptures and graphic works in France.
Founded in the mid-1990s by the spouses Marguerite and Aimé Maeght, famous post-World War II art dealers and publishers, the Foundation permanently exhibits numerous works by some of the most important artists of the twentieth century, such as Jean Arp, Pierre Bonnard , Georges Braque, Chagall, Fernand Léger, Alberto Giacometti and Joan Mirò. In addition to the exhibition halls, the Foundation also includes an extensive library of over 30,000 volumes of modern and contemporary art and a chapel with a 12th-century Spanish-made crucifix and a slate via crucis by Raoul Ubac.
The city of Saint-Paul-de-Vence was chosen by the couple as the headquarters of the Foundation for its past as a happy refuge for artists and intellectuals. It is housed in a modern building, designed by the Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert with the collaboration of some of the most famous artists, such as Mirò and Giacometti. The garden around the structure houses monumental ceramics and bronzes.
