Natural History Museum of Rouen

The Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Rouen is a science and natural history museum in Rouen. Founded in 1828, it is located in the former convent of the Visitation Sainte Marie, a 17th century convent which also houses the Muséer des Antiquités. It is one of the largest natural history collections in France outside of Paris: it contains around 800,000 objects and species from all over the world. The museum was born as a "Cabinet of Natural History", a higher education institution intended for courses in zoology, botany and pharmacy. Thanks to the will of the director Félix- Archimède Pouchet, the Museum opened its doors to the public in 1834, a particularly innovative and modern decision for the time. Today, the museum is a place of discovery on the scientific and cultural issues of the contemporary world, such as sustainable development, biodiversity, global warming, the different cultures of the world. The museum organizes various activities for adults and children, such as temporary exhibitions, events, scientific ateliers. The museum also received the Mom'art award for the quality of the reception of the youngest visitors.
