The Japanese Cultural Institute in Rome is located in the Valle Giulia area, in front of the Faculty of Architecture and near the National Gallery of Modern Art, where there are many other foreign academies. It is proposed as a basis for the diffusion and showcase of Japanese culture in Italy by carrying out an activity marked by two fundamental characteristics. The first consists in planning and implementing its own independent activity which translates into multiple cultural events for a better knowledge of Japanese culture, such as exhibitions, conferences, concerts, film screenings, theatrical performances, collaborations with organizations and institutions in Italy, courses of Japanese language, library with related services. The second is aimed at coordinating and assisting the programs of the Japan Foundation for its many activities in Italy. The Japanese Cultural Institute was designed by architect Isoya Yoshida combining the language and materials of traditional Japanese architecture with the prevailing brutalist concrete style of the time. The Institute is located in a large garden with fluid shapes, in contrast to the severe ones of the building, built by Ken Nakajima and is considered the first Japanese garden ever built in Europe by Japanese workers. The well-known landscape architect Ken Nakajima is also responsible for the project for the Japanese area at the Botanical Garden in Rome. The garden can be visited at certain times of the year with a guided tour by appointment.
