From 16 February to 4 December 2021
THE INDEPENDENT, the MAXXI program dedicated to independent thought and practice, presents the special project by Max Fletcher in collaboration with Andrea Celeste La Forgia: «There are no painters but only people who dedicate themselves to painting among other activities». The work is the result of a performance conceived for the FRIENDSHIP | summit SOLIDARITY | ALLIANCES on the occasion of the five-year anniversary of THE INDEPENDENT.
There are no painters but only people who engage in painting among other activities.
As part of the SUMMIT, the British artist Max Fletcher - currently residing at the British School in Rome - has produced a series of three canvases during a complex action in which word, painting, gesture combine in a critical rethinking of the past as a medium of building friendship, solidarity and alliances. Pasolini is the essential reference both for the performance and for the canvases, which show three fragments of dialect theatrical texts taken by Pasolini himself and by two writers he loves, Pirandello and Bertolazzi.
The selected passages - translated into English - offer a humorous representation of moments centered on a sense of community and solidarity, notions that Pasolini attributes to the dialect, understood "Gramscian" as a literary form of emancipation, capable of subverting or contrasting concepts of linear progress and formal unification.
