The show

Everything is deeply intertwingled / Everything is deeply intertwined. The word was coined in 1960 by the American sociologist and philosopher Ted Nelson to express the complexity of the interrelationships of knowledge, where there are no single subjects but all knowledge as a whole, made up of myriads of connections and cross-relationships, which cannot be untangled and neatly divided into a hierarchical order, but they must have exploded into many dimensions. Only in this way can they return an image of verisimilitude and a much deeper, richer and broader system that allows us to visualize the connections and transformations of the world before our eyes.

Embracing this vision, INTERTWINGLED The Role of the Rug in Arts, Crafts and Design , the exhibition curated by Martí Guixé and Inga Knölke which opens at the National Gallery on 21 March 2022, constitutes a surprising unicum and offers for the first time a fascinating reading, open and disruptive of the interconnected world in which we live. From the Central Hall to the Sala delle Colonne and through punctual references to the works of Time is Out of Joint, the exhibition explores the carpet and tapestry in different fields - from art, to craftsmanship, to design - and projects it into more conceptual, establishing new relationships that dialogue with ideas such as nomadism, real estate, visible and invisible networks, digital networks, hypertext, decentralization of power, non-linear narration and the power inherent in the concept of union.

Rugs and tapestries are materially composed of a multitude of threads and knots that intertwine to create designs and surfaces. The carpet, therefore, is both a metaphor and an interface of a device that shows-and-hides the weft and the warp from which it originated. Carpets and tapestries can be interpreted as ways of occupying space in a physical and metaphorical sense, since the plot is also composed, remaining in the metaphor, of political, economic and social relations. a carpet or a tapestry is also the proto-configuration of our society and our culture. And it is only by adopting this systemic thinking, which feeds on connections, that we can understand our material and cultural ecosystem starting from small habits, up to big decisions.

"INTERTWINGLED - in the words of the Director of the Galleria Nazionale Cristiana Collu - is not just a dense and layered ethnography of design, it is a journey into many dimensions, which intertwines our experience with what we know and what we still have to discover, together with what we do not see but we should be able to imagine. Visiting the exhibition will be like taking a leap into simultaneity, a leap that discards the obvious and finds amazement, accelerates, slows down, changes pace, redesigns and recreates ».
